Trouble Shooting

This page can be a valuable resource to users of all LIMS products. Although not every segment of every LIMS product can be troubleshot from any one single repository, this page attempts to define certain common problems that LIMS users may experience while using their LIMS software over a client/server network.

Connectivity

Why can't I get to the server? - Every network is different. There can be several reasons for not connecting to a server. The four most notorious reasons are as follows:
  • Can you ping the server? If not, there may be network issues.
  • Have you recently rec'd a newer client machine? If so, your machine name may be different, have a different machine name and/or something hasn't been configured on it yet.
  • Has the server's machine name been changed? This may be an issue after a server is replaced.
  • Are you a valid user on the server? This may be an issue after a server is replaced.

Data Issues

Why can't I see my data? - This question most often comes up when someone is either browsing an app for data, or running a report, and doesn't see the expected data. By this, we don't mean incorrect data, but rather, missing data. Although there can be an infinitude of reasons for this, here are the most common:
  • You may not have selected an appropriate date range. Some apps will default to 'today' and need to be altered for data that was created last month.
  • You may be passing in parameters that are not correct. For example, you will never see results for 'ground water' if you are querying on 'drinking water'.

Pinting

Why can't I print? - First of all, are you trying to print locally or from the server? If locally, can you print a test page? If not, it's not the LIMS, but the machine itself. These are the most common reasons for not being able to print locally:
  • Did someone install a new printer on your machine? Your machine may not have the correct print drivers installed.
  • Is the printer cable securely fastened.
  • Are there numerous print jobs in the print queue?
  • Is the application being printed waiting on a response from you?
  • Is there a paper jam?
  • Is the machine out of paper?
  • When was the last time the machine was rebooted>
If you are having difficulty printing from a server application and/or a network printer, here are the most common problems:
  • Did someone install a new printer on the network? Your client machine and/or the server may not have the correct print drivers installed.
  • Is the printer cable securely fastened.
  • Can you 'see' the network printer over the network?
  • Do you have permissions for either the printer and/or server machine?
  • Are there numerous print jobs in the print queue?
  • Is the application being printed waiting on a response from you?
  • Is there a paper jam?
  • Is the machine out of paper?
  • When was the last time the machine was rebooted>
